A Mother/Daughter Business

Anna inspired the collection of vintage and antique gifts/collectables.   Her mother, Judy, has a passion for sewing, quilting, and crafting.  It was a natural evolution to begin creating wearable art from vintage/antique cloth and quilts.

Why Start Selling Quilted Clothing???

A great question! I am recently retired and began back sewing as a hobby (now as a passion).  I started to create the perfect jacket/coat from vintage quilts, most of which needed restoration/revitalization so they could be worn and shown to the world.  I made so many that I had no option but to start a small business and start selling them.  As a result, nearly all of my creations are my size (5foot 8 in and 145 lbs) or my daughter's (6 feet 180 lbs).  So I try to encourage people who want one of these coats to contact me for a custom made jacket/coat.  I now have a roomful of new, vintage, and antique quilts.

Creating Quilted Clothing

The Process

Creating a quilt coat from an antique or vintage quilt is a slow process.  If the quilt is in good  shape, then it can be made directly into a piece of clothing.  If the batting has deteriorated  or the quilt top needs repair, the layers have to be separated..  The quilt top is then soaked, washed, and rinsed multiple times to remove as many stains as possible.  Likely some stains remain telling their own story.

The old cotton threads holding the quilted pieces together are frequently repaired both by hand and machine.  Likely, there will be some small areas that are missed and it is recommended that the new owner is comfortable with a needle and thread for little spots that may come loose with time.

A quilt "sandwich" is then made with fresh, new batting and lined with a fabric that is structurally sound to keep the coat structurally intact and very durable for years to come.

I make these coats to be practical by adding many pockets including at least one inside pocket to discreetly carry a cellphone/small coin purse.  Side/inseam or welted pockets are also chosen  to allow as much of the original coat pattern to be undisturbed.  Some quilts are large enough to create two pieces of clothing, but even so, each clothing piece is unique and cannot  be replicated.
